WRIG and HCWG hosted the 2014 Environmental Fun Day on Friday June 6th at Rackham’s Community Pond. Over 80 students from local schools participated in the educational event, learning about fish, wildlife, forestry and water quality. The rainy weather didn’t dampen spirits, and the students were enthusiastic participants in the day. Pictures below:
- The process of sampling using electro-fishing is a way to collect aquatic species from in stream using specialized eqiupment to temporarily stun fin fish and enable biologists to gently handle them for research purposes. Using this method obtains valuable information about species variety and population, without killing the fish. This technique is only used by specially trained technicians.
- Mounted birds and mammals from the PEI Department of Fish and Wildlife provide an up close and personal perspective for students
- Students learn from Foresters about how trees grow, what they can tell us, and how valuable they really are.
- Displays were set up in the tent so students could stay dry as they learned
- Students learning about water quality and what it means for aquatic life
