UPEI & Holland College

WRIG continues to work toward increasing environmental education opportunities in and for its watershed residents as well as for post secondary students from the University of Prince Edward Island and Holland College. Professors and their classes are always invited to our watershed for tours of our projects and we hope to continue employing post-secondary students through both summer positions and longer internships/co-op placements.

We commonly assist UPEI Masters of Science students with their field work, such as electrofishing, fish tagging, and seine netting, in our watershed areas, as well as those nearby. In September 2021, WRIG was visited by the Atlantic Veterinary College Ecosystem Health Group to discuss watershed management and remedial action in the context of anoxia and a soft-shell clam mortality case study. Earlier that year, we also met with Holland College Wildlife Conservation Technology students to harvest red-osier dogwood cuttings for live staking, a riparian zone enhancement technique. In 2009, UPEI Biology visited Rackham’s Pond and Conservation Area and used the Wheatley River Community Hall as a remote classroom to learn about the Restoration Project.
