Successful 2013 Celebrate our River Festival!

The Wheatley River Improvement Group had a very successful day down at Rackham’s Community Pond on August 31st, where the annual Celebrate our River Festival and Duck Race took place. There were around 70 community members and visiting families who came out to enjoy the pond and our members BBQ, where everyone was served hamburgers, delicious fresh Island corn and potatoes, followed by ice cream sundaes. Kids had a chance to explore the pond surroundings and learn about the watershed, take part in an eco-scavenger hunt and bird watching along the nature trail. We also had a suspenseful duck race this year, with a whole flock of rubber ducky’s floating their way to the finish line just above the Wheatley River Bridge.  The lucky duck winning ticket holders were Keith & Tammy Gallant, Sarah Buote, and Shelley Ling, taking home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively.

On behalf of WRIG, I’d like to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those who support WRIG efforts and helped make the day a great event. Local businesses and Farms including Blue Bay and Brookfield Gardens,  ADL, Gallant’s Clover Mart, Oyster Bed Store, and the PEI Dept of Forestry provided support and delicious local food, the Wheatley River Hall provided us with a location to hold our BBQ, and of course, we couldn’t have done anything without our volunteers that day; WRIG Board of Directors Stewart McRae, Tracy Gallant and Stephen Lowe; volunteers Pat Cosh, Michelle Dollar, and Jim Kemp, Duck chasers Christina Pater and Cathy Ott, and summer staff Daniel Watts and Colin Jeffry. We’d also like to acknowledge the Wildlife Conservation Fund for the financial contributions WRIG receives which helps make everything we do possible.

WRIG plans to hold the event again next year, and hope to see everyone out again to enjoy Rackham’s Community Pond in the meantime!
